This is a campaign shot which demonstrates how the outcome of a basketclub brief lead to the production of a small series.
(2021)
The craft of basketry has more or less come to a standstill; so far, we failed to mechanise three-dimensional weaving. The first prototype of this cap that I made for Basketclub was pleasing me and I decided to develop it further into a functional accessory which expresses a new vision on modern crafts in fashion design. For the cap’s production, crafts are combined with computational techniques. First, a 3D program calculates a series of unique, flat shapes. Then, a CNC machine cuts these shapes out of a single sheet of artificial (paper) leather. The shapes are then woven by hand into a mesmerising baseball cap. This object embodies the specific quality a 3D-braided construction ideally has; it is light and yet strong.
